Fasching Dinner and Ball

Saturday, Mar 2  | 5:30 - 11 pm

Fasching is one of the major annual celebrations in German speaking countries. It is the celebration before Ash Wednesday – a last party before Lent! While it is quite popular in the Rhineland Basel in Switzerland and North to Mainz and beyond in Germany, it is also celebrated in other Cities, including Cologne (Köln). One of our late members who hosted the German Hour program for many years in Pittsburgh ( Heino Coelle) served as the Prince of the Kölner Karneval as a young man.

The events in Europe are like the festivities enjoyed in New Orleans, with parades, masquerades, parties and festivities. In Switzerland, particularly, it is a time to dress in costume and rebel from the usual “businesslike” countenance. Here at Teutonia we warmup for it with a “kickoff” party called the Kappenabend held on Saturday, Feb 16th where members wear their craziest hats and have an evening of fun and laughter – and the selection of the King and Queen of Karneval.

On Saturday March 2nd, we invite our members and guests to our Fasching Dinner and Ball. We offer them an opportunity to dress up for the evening, assume your favorite persona, and join us for the start of Lent! As they say in Germany, “Am Aschermittwoch ist alles vorbei” (After Ash Wednesday, everything is over!”) A special Faschings menu will be served in the Ratskeller from 5:30 to 7:30pm with prices ranging from $13.95 to $22.95. Please make sure to call for dinner reservations.

Come celebrate with us for one of the most famous of German festivals! Tickets ($10.00) for the Sängerhalle celebration upstairs will be available at the bar. A band will give the revelers a chance to dance and celebrate the event with the King and Queen! Costumes encouraged!
